“Wizard Staffs” or “Wizard Sticks” is the name of a drinking game played by young city dwellers on alcohol-fueled camping trips to the woods. Each new beer that the camper opens is duct-taped to the top of a steadily growing tower of now-empty cans, which he or she carries and drinks from. The goal is to build as tall a staff as possible over the course of the day or night.
For Wizard Ring, I organized a weekend camping trip with friends and collected thirteen beer can staffs, ranging in height from approximately 3 to 6.5ft, which are being cast as detailed concrete facsimiles. Capitalizing on the title of the drinking game and the eccentric ceremony that it evokes, the thirteen resulting towers will be arranged as an unconventional and anomalous stone circle in an outdoor forest location.
