A nurse log is a fallen tree that provides a seedbed for new plant life through its decomposition. Seedlings root on the log, taking advantage of a hospitable environment, and absorbing its nutrients as it decays. Nurse Log is the simulacrum of an existing rotting log, manufactured from layers of oriented strand board (OSB), and intended for forest installation and decomposition.

OSB is an inexpensive wood product and a favourite sheathing material on large housing tracts. It contains moisture resistant resins and preservatives to withstand rot and resist wood-boring insects. Professional literature notes that OSB is not expected to cause any ecological hazards as a result of intended uses, and dry land disposal is generally acceptable.
